Do your think China is getting ready for a bunch of ugly American tourists? They love stuff like this. For Americans, China is becoming a vacation destination.

bob: China has many beautiful sceneries and interesting phenomenon to sightsee. There are inconveniences though.

They've got to improve on their sanitation...the smell is horrendous. Last year in Beijing, we were rating the toilets wherever we went. There were 1st class ones as well as 3rd and ones you've got to hold your breath!

I know I'd develop kidney problem should I stay there longer. I'm one of those clean toilet freaks!

Nonetheless I still want to visit!

I have a thing about toilets. Rule of thumb: hold it until I get home or back to the hotel. Looks like I would be out of luck in China, especially if an "emergency" came up. Did you read CNN on line news yesterday? They reported about Chinese street vendors who were using cardboard in the food they sold to cut costs. So on your next visit to China, if the food tastes like cardboard . . . it probably is.

Well....I don't understand exactly. Why do they smell any wrse than American toilets---I mean "public restrooms"? Is it because they do not clean them? It kind of makes me gag just thinking about this and picturing it...! IIICCCKKKK!

I am unable to tend to my garden myself..It is too big...I have a gardner who comes once a week and stays ALL day...well, 6 or 7 hours...except he goes away for lunch...He has two helpers with him, but basically they do "clean up work...And he does all the rest. Truthfully, If I could afford it, I would have him twice a week...or IDEALY, three times a week....So much does not get done because it is very time consuming and I cannot afford to have him come as much as needed....And, having said that, I'm lucky it looks as good as it does, under the circumstances.
I am out there---at least upstairs every day...But because of health issues I am unable to axrually DO very much...But I enjoy it all, tremendously.

Bob: street food? No way. I wouldn't even go near one. I do not want to shorten my life just yet. Recently, a few young and gungho friends had food poisoning after eating at some street stalls when they were forewarned. They were given drips at a clinic. Anyway, we'd always eat at hotels...or with our Chinese friends in a restaurant.

Never never trust street foods in Asia.

Naomi: It's the strong smell of ammonia: I believe the users are not in the habit of flushing after each use. Also the cleaners do not see the importance of cleaning the toilets regularly. Besides there are too many people. However in cities like Beijing or Shanghai, the toilets are tolerable and becoming better as the country becomes more open.

Thank you naomi for sharing your garden. I did wonder about your physical condition. What a luxury it is to have a garden and a big one. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful garden on the hill.

Today's Wall Street Journal (7-13)Section B, Page One - the headline - "China, Newly Fastidious, Spiffs Up Public Restrooms"....... hmmmmm, their idea of spiffy is different than ours, don't you think? :)

Now I've seen everything Lea...YIKES! I have to say....'it's different,' but if I were a man, I don't know if I'd be comfortable using these facilities....just a little too 'alfresco.'
