strapped to an explosive vest

I felt sick to my bone when I heard the news yesterday.

Mr Alan Johnston, the only BBC international correspondent who lived in the Gaza Strip was kidnapped by a group called 'the army of Islam' on 12th March 2007. Yesterday a video clip on Mr Johnston strapped to an explosive vest was released to prevent forced entry to save him.

The group wanted the UK government to release Abu Qatada, a Palestinian-born Islamic cleric suspected of having close links with al-Qaeda in exchange.

According to sources Mr Johnston's reporting gave insightful and accurate reportings on the situation. Now that he has been kidnapped, are there good reportings coming out from the area?

What was in the mind of the leader of 'the army of Islam'? What does he or his group expect to resolve or achieve?

By calling themselves 'the army of Islam' -- have they not made a mockery or tainted the name of their Allah? Why come under the banner of religion? Is this the only way to recruit suicide bombers to do their dirty work by calling on the name of their god? Is this the way to gain sympathy from the masses?

Are the leaders so powerless that they resort to using kidnapped hostage to become human bomb?

Yes, the actions of the Army of Islam defy logic. That said, we live in two different worlds: Theirs and ours. What's logical to you - to me, is not logical to "them". And vice versa. The Bush administration has done much to alienate a good portion of the world we live in. When America should have been extending olive branches we let fly bombs, missles and bullets. As someone once said, you can attract more flies with a little honey than with vinegar. Had America done this, the we would be much better off and you'd not see the kidnapping you've just described. It's time to break out the honey, Lea.

It is all horrendous, beyond words! Never did I think that I would be reading about our very own President, who says he gets his "orders" so to speak, from God...that HE is for torture.

No question that what you write about is horrible beyonf words---but what we are doing is not really a whole lot better. Where is the humanity?

Thanks soooo very much for your sweet words about my Birthday...In all honesty, the way the world is today....Well, lets just say, it is good to remember better times.

ooladyhills: yes, where is humanity? Just don't know where we are going or what we're doing. I guess I have to live one day at a time.

The sad thing is that many of those people are not shocked by this at all. It is their reality! Man, we are lucky to be living where we do!

MOI: aren't we?! May peace reigns where we live indeed.

OMG. That is so horrible to hear. I just don't understand how people can act in such ways!
